EPISODE SUMMARY
In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Mark Williams, a passionate advocate for mental health, particularly in the context of fatherhood and perinatal/postnatal depression. Mark is a public speaker, life coach, author, and the founder of International Fathers Mental Health Day. He shared his deeply personal journey through mental health challenges, particularly surrounding the birth of his son and the early years of fatherhood, discussing the challenges he faced, including ADHD, depression, and the societal expectations of men.
Mark opened up about the traumatic experience of his wife’s emergency C-section after a long labor, which triggered a panic attack and set off a series of mental health challenges for him. He candidly discussed the feelings of guilt and shame he experienced, as well as the societal expectations of fatherhood that left him feeling isolated and confused. He expressed how he expected to feel an overwhelming rush of love upon seeing his newborn son, but instead felt a mix of anxiety and concern for his wife’s well-being.
Throughout the episode, we explored the complexities of paternal mental health, including the stigma surrounding men’s mental health issues. Mark shared his experiences with depression, anxiety, and the coping mechanisms he employed, such as drinking and avoiding situations. He highlighted the importance of recognizing postpartum rage in men, a topic often overlooked in discussions about mental health.
We delved into the challenges of seeking help, particularly for fathers who may feel they need to “man up” and not show vulnerability. Mark emphasized the need for open conversations about mental health among men and the importance of creating safe spaces for fathers to share their experiences. He recounted how a chance encounter with another father in the gym opened the floodgates for him, leading to the establishment of support groups for fathers struggling with similar issues.
As our discussion progressed, we touched on the long-term effects of unresolved mental health issues and the importance of early intervention. Mark shared insights into how the lack of sleep and the pressures of new parenthood can exacerbate mental health challenges, and we discussed the need for more awareness and research into paternal mental health.
This episode is a powerful reminder of the importance of breaking the silence around men’s mental health, particularly in the context of fatherhood. Mark’s story is one of resilience and hope, and I believe it will resonate with many listeners who may be facing similar struggles. Join us as we explore the complexities of mental health, the impact of fatherhood, and the importance of seeking help and support.
